The missing day and other deleted scenes.

Image

The missing day wich is depicted in the script, occurs just after Art tells the Skip tale to Ray and Ricky. At that point Ray goes back home and instead of the Jeopardy scene, he goes to bed and hears strange and various animal noises coming from down the street,Carol tries to cool him down and tells him it's just a cat fight or something. But one of the Klopeks let the beast get back in his yard.(I guess it was Landru).
When I've asked to the editor Marshall Harvey,he told me that at one point Landru maybe killed a rabbit. Not sure if that night scene was filmed, Joe Dante doesn't remember if the missing day was fully filmed.

Then the scene cuts to the next morning - the missing day continues.

From his window, Rumsfield notices that his lawn is devastated and then
runs toward Walter's house,Ricky is there too,but Walter ignores them because he is very upset himself that his own lawn is devastated too. They investigate the grass like police detectives.Maybe that is this event wich provoked Walter's heart problem later...Plus the bees incident. Since he loved to get the best looking grass of the street.

This scene was filmed as these lobby cards confirm the script description.
(You can notice that Ricky doesn't wear his gloves, unlike the day before.)

Later the same day, as Rumsfield changed cloths, Walter who noticed that the devastation came from the Klopeks house goes there to confront them, Reuben comes out and splashes Walter's legs with the water hose, a scene that the other neighbors are observing from a distance (Ray, Mark, Ricky, Art and the postman played by Archie Hahn).

In the script when Reuben notices the group, they wave at him with a smile like a bunch of "zombies".Not sure if Walter vs Reuben was filmed but it's probable.
Edit august 2023 : If you check the garden hose of the Klopeks before the missing day and after, you can notice that its disposed slightly differently, so the scene was most likely filmed.

In the theatrical cut there is only one shot from afar, but you can barely notice the holes, even in bluray.

Walter's devastated grass can be seen closer, thanks to an alternate scene in the workprint. This scene also shows a side of the Klopek's house you don't see in the theatrical version.

Image

Now you can notice that the clothes worn by the characters are identical to the ones they wear when Art comes out at night to get Ray, who's watching Jeopardy.Ricky seems to have changed clothes for his evening date with his gf.Mark joins them and Ricky spies on them with his gf.(they just added the jackets). You can notice the camo t-shirt pattern of Rumsfield on the black and white pics,he also sports the same bullet around his neck).

In the movie they make you think only a few minutes pass untill the moment Ray goes back home and Art makes him come back at the window so they can all watch Hans hitting the trash bag.

Check the clothes change there :

Image

It seems that the paperboy was supposed to be there with the group
but the scene was not filmed.Great writing, it was a waste to not get it
in the movie.I guess the postman replaced the paperboy as they wanted a character not from Hinckley Hills in the scene.

Image

On this picture you can see the continuation of the daylight scene after Rumsfield falls from his roof and blasts his car window.
The movie shows us what Ray and Art are doing inside the Klopeks.
Then we're back outside but in the final cut the night is falling already. There was a part that was filmed, maybe partially, involving a cop and other jokes before dusk.

Rumsfield is bending to check out his car with Ricky and one of his friends next to him.
Image

The part with the cop witnessing Art doing very suspicious things was also filmed, Kevin Gage played him.You can spot the car too.So I guess that the whole part was shot.Only difference in the scripts is that Rumsfield doesn't fall from the roof and ask the teens for a ladder.
Kevin Gage was also in the street during the endings but this time he had his jacket on, and his tiepin is not put the same way.

Deleted scene :

When Ray and Art start digging the Klopeks yard there was more
digging before they enter their house,.According to recent infos, I'd say this one is probably in the alternate tv cut.

Image

The alternate scene from the workprint where Rumsfield searches
Walter's house is also missing a bit with Art snapping at the Klopeks.

These two pics show that they at least partially filmed it, when Art starts to yell at them.

Rare black 'n white picture from the same workprint scene,Ricky is holding the wig and smiles, from another angle, probably a shot just after Ray gives the wig to Ricky, and right before Art is starting to yell at the Klopeks.

Image

Image

The black n white pic shows an alternate or extended bit with
Art standing near Rumsfield.

Image

Image

The barbecue scene noticed in the trailer back in the old days, was in the workprint, but maybe another bit was missing, in the script the crow is taunting Ray, and in the wp you can clearly hear the crow squawking and Ray looking at it at 00h19m47s. Maybe it was filmed.

Image

From the trailer, not seen in the wp or final cut.

A close shot of Rumsfield's ink and Art saying "Klopeks"
not seen in the wp or final cut.

Image

Shot of Art falling on the other side of the fence with Ricky and Dave coming to the rescue:

Image

Shot of Dr. Klopek saying his name, from the workprint ending.
He is correcting the pronunciation of the detective.

This picture is an outtake from the dream sequence.
It was posted on the JOE DANTE: EN EL LÍMITE DE LA REALIDAD fb page.
The owner wrote up a book about Joe's filmo but its in spanish.

I've got some interesting information recently thanks to a guy who had watched the TV cut on KTLA5 california, he remembers that :

"Around when art is electrocuted, there were more scenes of them unloading the shed art crashed into. Also I remember there being numerous additional scenes of them digging in the klopeks backyard."

If you own an old tape with a Burbs recording, check it out,it could be the version I'm looking for.I'm buying it $100 .

Re: The missing day

Well this is my theory based on the script and these lobby cards
plus the clues in the movie. Why the hell would they all change clothes within two minutes ? Frank Lafond talks about this in his book.

In the book the pic of Walter Mark and Ricky (the black n white one)
is mentioned to be a deleted scene.

In the script this scene ends with the paperboy talking to the group
but I don't have any proof that this part was filmed.Maybe they 've put a postman instead of the paperboy in a sense that they needed a new witness who doesn't live in the street.Plus the Klopeks were living at 903 instead of 669 so the paperboy dialogue becomes irrelevant.

The only conradiction is that in the movie Ray leaves Art and Ricky saying he will watch tv, in the workprint he doesn't mention the tv.
They changed that line just so they can skip this day and make you believe he's going back home to watch Jeopardy with Carol, wich he only does 24 hours later.

The Assembly cut got a lot of scenes cut before the test screenings
The first ending was redone because a random guy said out loud that it felt boring. It was less spectacular , but it adds more insight about the Klopeks, Werner's speech about the suburbs is pretty good, Reuben mentionning that they wanted to eat Ray,the last moments with Art doing another bullsh!t by damaging Ray's lamp in the street,it has a more melancolic tone compared to the final cut ending.

Excellent sleuthing there! That makes sense to me. Looks like they had comedian/actor Rich Hall as the Postman.

Re: The missing day

I finally grabbed copy of the script and read through this day. In hindsight I can see why Joe cut the whole segment and went straight to the trash-bang with rain delay. The idea of animals or something wild ripping up sod doesn't fit with the rest of the story. It would have been nice to have had a Walter-Uncle Reuben standoff, but the torn up grass reason doesn't really make sense. I'm glad they did and would totally crowd fund the release of this missing day if it still exists.

Oh oh oh. I stand corrected on the mail man. It is not Rich Hall. It is Archie Hahn. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0353869/

Per Trailer From hell: Btw the screen grab above is from a deleted scene–in the background is Archie Hahn as the mailman who never appears in the film.

Which makes sense because Archie Hahn is also in Eerie Indiana and Matinee.

In addition to the mailman, there's a character in the script that never made the movie. Not sure if they simply cut him or if they never cast and shot him. It's a kid whose always circling around on a bicycle with a squeaky wheel. They refer to him as the "Barkelow Kid"
