Same here, it was new to me.

Re: Ray was unemployed!
I never paid attention to all of that, but something told me that his mannerisms about work seemed like something more was going on. And Carol saying "Please let's get outta here and go up to the cabin for some rest. You were watching a dog poop at 6 o'clock in the morning for Christ sake!" it just seemed whatever his job was, it was very stressful or that he was so accustomed to being up that early that it didn't make sense he'd be up if he really had a week off. He couldn't sleep because of worries about work or getting another job.
I just got that vibe, but as I said, I never paid much attention to it.

Re: Ray was unemployed!
Interesting. I have seen this movie six thousand times and I never caught that vibe. When Ray gets uneasy when Art asks him about being on vacation -- I always took it to mean Ray just knew Art was going to ask about going to lake like Carol did and deep down he knew staying home all week was going to be a mistake.

Welcome to the neighborhood riraho! Your last place didn't burn to the ground did it?
I've been watched The 'Burbs too many times to count and have been on the forums for 5 years now and I still find out new things all the time!
See ya around!

Same here. All the things referencing it were cut such as his boss in the nightmare and the ending.Maybe him losing his job was an
impediment to the overall feel good tone of the final cut.
