Movies That Genuinely Scared You

I love horror films, and I'm sure lots of you do too. But not many of them genuinely scare me. That's not a terrible thing, because I can enjoy horror films that aren't scary. But it is special/unusual when I come across one that really does terrify me.

So I thought I'd share the very few horror films that genuinely scared me:

1. The Shining
2. Session 9
3. The Blair Witch Project
4. Fire In The Sky
5. Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County

There may be a few more for me, but right now those are the only ones I can think if that genuinely scared me.

What about you?

The Ring is the last film to actually scare me. Blair Witch Project was a good one too.

The bathroom scene of the Shining always scared me as a kid.

It's the 2 little dead girls that get me. Every single time. Especially the time where he discovers them on his little three wheel bike. The entire mood of The Shining does unpleasant things to my mind actually...

And it's been a long, long time since I watched The Ring. Need to watch that one again.

Kris, you have two movies on your list which deal with alien abductions. If this generally is a topic which might make you feel uncomfortable, I can only highly recommend "Intruders". They showed it on German TV back in 1993 when I was 11 years old and it scared the hell out of this little kid. I had terrible nightmares even months later and it was only able to sleep with the lights turned on for weeks.

Here's the imdb link in case you're interested: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104523/?ref_=fn_al_tt_3

And this little scene here shows a little bit of what I mean, damn, damn, damn:

The movie also deals with those little Greys which are depicted in a very scary way, too:

Will add some of my other scary movies later on, but this one is definitely on the list!

Being scared of a movie, is sort of like drinking your first drink, not being a virgin anymore etc.

I remember the first time I was genuinly scared of a movie, was a Norwegian Movie in Black & White called "The Stowaway", it's not the American Movie "The Hitcher" or "The Hitchhiker", but the Norwegian title is "Blindpassasjeren".

It's about this Alien that takes over the bodies of the spaceship crew, and they never know who it is:

It's from 1978, and I was only 10 when I saw it on my mom & dads black * white television set (whom I helped repair, believe it or not), I got SO scared I couldn't sleep for DAYS. I still remember that feeling today.

You can read about it here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078576/

I never got genuinely scared of ANY movie after that.

I don't believe it!

I saw this years and years ago, probably around the same time you did, and it scared the crap out of me and has haunted me ever since. But I could never think what it was called and I could never find it anywhere. I've told so many people about this plot trying to get someone to tell me what it is, and no one ever knew.

As soon as that trailer started playing I knew it was it, especially that scene lit in blue where they come through the wall, lean over her, and take her. That's the scene that's haunted me for 20 years!

Hopefully now I can track it down to watch it...

I really do love alien abduction films...They terrify me!

Re: Movies That Genuinely Scared You

Of the top of my head, here are some movies that come to mind.

Back in 1989 (I was 10) our whole family spent a weekend at this hotel. Us kids was allowed to stay up late so we watched a movie on TV. Poltergeist 3! It scared the !@#$ outta me, especially the scene in the parking garage with the puddle.

After the movie I decided to go for a swim in the pool. What I didn't know was that the only light in there was the one inside the pool. Fastest most freaked out swim I ever had.

Then in 1991 when I got WAY into horror movies at the age 12 I had this brilliant idea that I should watch Stephen King's IT when I was home alone one night... THAT was a scary experience.

From then on I devoured horror movies and it became my favorite genre. I can't really recall any movies that actually scared me since like Poltergeist 3 and IT. I guess I've become somewhat immune to it, and watching this many horror movies you can see the scares come a mile away.

BUT

The Paranormal activity movies get to me for some reason. I think it's because they're believable. Watching stuff happen every night and seeing things escalate is great but the sound is what makes those movies. You need a good sound system to pick up the details and it adds so much to the movies. If you like your horror movies to be in your face and gory these are not for you.

I don't think I've seen Poltergeist 3. The first 2, but not the third. But the first one was always very creepy to me, and it probably helped that I was so young at the time I first saw it.

I agree with you about Paranormal Activity and why it's scary. It's exactly the same reason why The Blair Witch and Alien Abduction: Incident In Lake County scared me so much. They feel real. There are a lot of bad ones around these days, but generally "found footage" is always slightly scarier than normal horror films, especially if they're done well.

JoOngle, that film you linked to looks interesting, but I bet it will be hard to find it! It sounds like a mix between the films Alien and Sphere...

@Kris: Cool, so know you know the name of the movie which has been haunting you for about 20 years emoticon I'm always glad to help. To be honest watching this still makes me feel uncomfortable but at least it's not causing nightmares anymore emoticon Do you still remember the scene in which those two little girls are chasing the blonde boy through the forest. Then they see him standing at a lake while an UFO is hovering over the lake. Suddenly the boy turns around and you can see that he's one of those hybrids...Gosh, that's indeed the stuff I'll never forget.

@Dave: I always thought that Poltergeist 3 was one of the most underrated scary movies ever. It's also for me one of those "watched-as-a-kid-and-got-scared-for-the-rest-of-my-life" movies. One thing that always makes me feel uncomfortbale are scenes with mirrors. When all of a sudden something appears in a mirror which shouldn't be there...damn, you'll always get me. And I remember (although the last time I watched Poltergeist 3 was a long time ago) that they are in some kind of skyscraper and there a lot of scenes which feature mirrors.

Ok, I also definitely need to watch part 3 then. The question is, do I watch 1 and 2 first!? It's been a long time since I saw those first 2.
